Android 2.2 Froyo OTA Update Rollout to Nexus One

Looks like Google is rolling out an official 2.2 Froyo update to nexus one users. Now, its not apparent if this is just an update for those that used the leaked android build, or if this update will actually roll out to all nexus one users, but it would make sense considering that Google just opened up the Froyo 2.2 source today. I have not yet received this update myself on my Nexus one (T-Mobile Nexus on Rogers), but Ill be sure to keep everyone posted. There’s also a XDA Developers thread that you might want to follow as well.

Google provides limited Nexus One phone support

“Google has finally stepped up to the plate to offer a support phone line for Nexus One owners. It’s a necessary move, given the volume of customer complaints, but it’s also turned out to be a lackluster one.

Nexus One owners can call (888) 48NEXUS between 4am and 7pm PST to speak with a real live person. Unfortunately, though, they’ll only be able to get information on the status/shipping information on your existing order. For technical support or repairs and returns, you’ll still need to contact HTC customer care (1-888-216-4736). For billing/service support, you’ll still need to contact T-Mobile (1-877-453-1304).

Google doesn’t have to be its partners’ keeper, and if I were a Nexus One owner I’d rather have Google support than not. But it’s still got to be terribly frustrating to have three distinct places to turn when you’ve got a Nexus One issue.” – Gizmodo.com

Unlock and root a Nexus One

Less than one week after release, Google’s Nexus One phone can be rooted by anyone for access to tethering and other killer apps. The Android and Me blog has a helpful walkthrough of the unlocking process.

There isn’t a whole ecosystem of custom ROMs built for the Nexus One at this point, as there had been for the G1 when we rooted it for better performance and other goodies. Still, Cyanogen himself has released a little add-on, an Android 2.1 SDK is just out for developers to play with, and by giving yourself su powers, you can install a lot of apps from the Market with more capabilities than the average package.

Linus Torvalds gets a Nexus One

Linus Torvalds, sometimes known as the “Father of Linux” for his initiation of the development of the Linux kernel, purchased himself a Nexus One (Android is based on the Linux Kernel). Here’s what he has to say about it…

“I broke down and bought a Nexus One last week.

I got the original G1 phone from google when it came out, and I hardly ever used it. Why? I generally hate phones – they are irritating and disturb you as you work or read or whatever – and a cellphone to me is just an opportunity to be irritated wherever you are. Which is not a good thing.

At the same time I love the concept of having a phone that runs Linux, and I’ve had a number of them over the years (in addition to the G1, I had one of the early China-only Motorola Linux phones) etc. But my hatred of phones ends up resulting in me not really ever using them. The G1, for example, ended up being mostly used for playing Galaga and Solitaire on long flights, since I had almost no reason to carry it with me except when traveling.

But I have to admit, the Nexus One is a winner. I wasn’t enthusiastic about buying a phone on the internet sight unseen, but the day it was reported that it finally had the pinch-to-zoom thing enabled, I decided to take the plunge. I’ve wanted to have a GPS unit for my car anyway, and I thought that google navigation might finally make a phone useful.

And it does. What a difference! I no longer feel like I’m dragging a phone with me “just in case” I would need to get in touch with somebody – now I’m having a useful (and admittedly pretty good-looking) gadget instead.
