Less than one week after release, Google’s Nexus One phone can be rooted by anyone for access to tethering and other killer apps. The Android and Me blog has a helpful walkthrough of the unlocking process.

There isn’t a whole ecosystem of custom ROMs built for the Nexus One at this point, as there had been for the G1 when we rooted it for better performance and other goodies. Still, Cyanogen himself has released a little add-on, an Android 2.1 SDK is just out for developers to play with, and by giving yourself
su
powers, you can install a lot of apps from the Market with more capabilities than the average package.

The video below walks through the basic steps of the process, but see here for a more detailed guide.

If you’re like me and own a HTC Dream on Rogers here in Canada, you’ve probably received all those text messages and automated phone calls from rogers on a daily basis telling you to update your phone to their latest software version. This latest version fixes the E911 bug, a bug in the Roger’s android rom and prevented 911 calls from going through if you had the GPS enabled. What they don’t tell you though, is that after applying their update you will be unable to root your phone and enjoy all the cool root-only apps, like Wifi Tether (Which is pretty awesome). Ive got a solution for you, you can keep your root or root your phone without much trouble, as well as get your 3G back.

If you already have a rooted Rogers Dream and have lost your data, getting your data back is as easy as flashing a new radio image. Apparently, rogers is checking the radio version on all dreams and disconnecting ones with an older radio, that’s how they know if you’ve updated.

If you have already rooted your device, the Cyanogen wiki has a good tutorial for flashing your device with the latest radio image to get your 3g back on your rogers dream. Upgrading Dream Radio on a rooted device.

If you don’t have root yet, and want to root your device AND fix your 3g all in one shot, follow this guide. Rogers Dream to Cyanogen mod & 3g fix. This will root your phone, install Cyanogen mod, and fix your 3g all in one shot. (I followed this guide and it worked flawlessly). You will probably want to grab a backup app off the market to backup your text messages and such, because doing this will wipe all internal data on your phone (Stuff like pictures that are stored on your SD card will NOT be wiped).

Plus, once you root, you get access to all the cool root-only apps

For the record, before I decided to root my dream, I called rogers tech support multiple times trying to get a “Network Refresh”, which has been confirmed to fix your data without updating your device. Apparently rogers re-trained their staff to refuse to network refresh anyone with a dream device, I tried many many times with no luck.

Enjoy your data! You deserve it, after all you are paying for it.
